Oh the bike mount…I just don’t get it. Somebody somewhere said it’s faster to run out barefoot and everyone believes it. But as you well see, everyone that is shoeless gets a slow start to the bike. I stood in transition for about 800 of the people coming out, and I saw a total of ONE person do a fast mount, and that is my friend Donny Mills, former pro cyclist turned triathlete. He has his shoes on the bike but he runs out fast, does a cyclocross mount and was outta there. I guess he has the “getting feet into shoes” down so it’s fast for him.
I refuse to do it that way. I wear mtn bike shoes that are easy to run in and use SPD pedals. I deliberately use my ancient Sidis with the two velcro straps because they are so easy to get on and off. I run out of T1 and do my cross mount and I am outta there.
I’ve seen knock out drag down fights on the triathlon forums over which way is faster. The thing is, for the top pros it might be slightly faster to get out of transition without shoes. For everyone else, they really need to
a.) learn how to get on a bike properly
2.) practice clipping in
It’s painful to watch.
All I have to say is, I had the second fastest bike split for women and like the 54th fastest out of everyone…that was over 900 people. I think my way is faster.
Don’t even get me started on the woman I saw coming out of T1 on Sunday wearing her helmet backwards. Seriously. I can’t make this stuff up.
Seriously, AGers need to give up on the barefoot run to the bike mount. That’s just silly. I use road shoes and run with spd-sl cleats and pass ‘em on the way to the line before they know what’s happening. Clip in and start hammering, no fiddle-dicking with straps, buckles, velcro or whatever. But the pro’s do it so it must be faster.
I agree that for many the mt bike shoe is an awesome way to go. You can still run and mount so its very fast. On the way in however I think most can take there shoes off while riding and hit the group bare foot.
I also think there is a mental edge to not putting your shoes on. Which is that, at least in longer events, peope get WAY to comfy in transition even among the top age groupers. Like most things, people think they need more then they do.
its worth reading just for the fact that back then xtri was run by a dude from the UK so he edited it to make me sound like I was a Brit. Right then, whilst you pass the blood pudding mate?
And the video? I agree with G. A little painful to watch…especially that transition part. I personally would swim with my bike so when I get out of the water I can throw my bike over my shoulder cyclocross-style then sprint for ~50 yards in my road cleats then I would drop my bike and do a flying superman re-mount right into the aerobars. it would be the fastestsmoothestvotedmostlikelytobepartofcirquedusoleil transition ever.
Now you know how much I always enjoy your movies….
BUT WHAT IS UP WITH SWIM TO BIKE TRANSITION????
The stupidity that I see while people are trying to mount their bikes with their shoes already on…it’s just ridiculous.
I’d rather put my shoes on first and run in them and hop on the bike (yes - I am just THAT talented).

Great video by the way.
oh so painful… worse than fingernails on the chalk board watching that…

Race like a buddist monk.
I wrote an entire article for xtri.com on it. http://www.xtri.com/reports.aspx?riIDReport=2890&CAT=0&xref=xx

Whoa… things went pink around here? Nice format.
