Andy’s New Coat
I started this coat after I finished mine. I decided that sewing wool lined coats was my new favorite thing to make. People tend to shy away from lined coats because they are supposed to be difficult, but I find them fun and relatively easy. This coat, however, was not as easy as mine. I had to use a women’s pattern because I couldn’t find a suitable double breasted coat pattern for men. I then had to redraft the pattern pieces to fit him and make them more masculine. This was tedious but worth the end result – a great fitting coat that looks like it was made for men. Andy picked out the fabric, buttons, and agreed upon the style; I made modifications to the lapels and overall lines of the jacket (eliminated the flared silhouette and added width to the shoulders while preserving narrowness at the waist and hip, shortened the lengths while bringing the waist down lower). I also experimented with fusible woven interfacing that allowed better drape on the jacket front, while using shirt tailor interfacing in the collar stand and collar. |
- Yeah, I love him so much I made him a coat.
- Two Piece Sleeves
- Andy, looking terribly cute, don’t you agree?
- Back of Coat
- authentic pea coat buttons
- center back seam, with topstitching
- collar, with topstitching
- front, all buttoned up – a design element that was changed from the original pattern which was meant to be worn with a convertible collar
- front again
- unbuttoned
- unbuttoned again
- lining – I picked it out, he agreed it was ‘cool’
- close up of the lining
- even closer close up of the lining

Exceptional job on the coats. I like your new blog design, too. Now…if you’d only write more often…
Amazing coat! Andy’s not too bad either.
I can’t believe you worked on another coat immediately after yours. That’s amazing! Beautiful work!
Sheesh, Kerry! If you keep making such cool things you’re going to force me to start sewing again! I loved sewing with wool, too, it’s the flimsy, filmy stuff that always drove me mad.
