For a goodly number of years (specifically, 7) I lived without television. Then I moved in with Andy, and he had not only a large screen TV, but what seemed like thousands of satellite TV channels (I have since discovered that about 50% of those channels are Pay Per View, 10% are music, another 5% are religious, 6% are only in Spanish, and all but maybe 4 are dedicated exclusively to reality shows).
For the first year that I lived here I still didn’t watch any TV.
Then I discovered BBC America. I love BBCA but I have an issue with them – specifically, every time I find a show that I like, they limit me to only 1 season, which consists of at most 8 episodes, and I am then left hanging. I loved Ashes to Ashes (missed Life on Mars) but am still waiting for Season 2. I loved Being Human…heck, I don’t even know if there is a season 2 for that one.
Fortunately we have 2 other BBC stalwarts that are not going anywhere soon.
And they are?
Top Gear and Doctor Who.
I’ll save my feelings about Top Gear for another day (let me just state for the record that I think my dream job would be hosting that show with Clarkson, May and Hammond. Seriously, what better foil for the 6′5″ Clarkson than me?).
Doctor Who, however, is rapidly taking up all of my free time. Funny, since I was scared to death of it as a child. Apparently it used to come on immediately after Sesame Street, and my brother and sister (who are much older than me) used to watch it. My mom said I used to run out of the room crying whenever it came on, and I do have distinct memories of waiting until the credits rolled on Sesame Street before planning my escape to my bedroom, lest I should hear that creepy theme music of Doctor Who.
I never really got Doctor Who, but after watching BBCA for the last 9 months, I became intrigued by the adverts for the latest season, featuring David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor. It looked interesting, the special effects were much improved, and the concept seemed like something I could really appreciate, seeing as my all time favorite book is still The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (I still haven’t seen the movie, though). So I set the DVR to record a few episodes and sat down to see what the fuss was all about.
Oh.My.God. David Tennant is hot. And cute. And funny and an amazing actor. Had they cast someone like him in the role back in the 1970s instead of the creepy Tom Baker – the guy with the scarf – I probably would have had significantly fewer nightmares.
Did I mention he’s cute? And Scottish? Although, he sheds the Scottish accent for the character, but still. Yummy.
That’s not to say that Andy is still not my perfect guy, because he is. I doubt David Tennant could do any of the things that Andy can do (race motorcycles, fly planes upside down, design and entire software architecture, run 10 miles with me or beat me in a triathlon. But Andy is not on the television fighting Daleks or making wisecracks while using a magic screwdriver.
Sadly, Tennant’s reign as the Tenth Doctor has come to an end. Fortunately for me, I only started watching the show this year, so I have 3.5 seasons of Doctor Who to catch up on. And even better, BBCA (or maybe it was that other channel that shows Doctor Who) had a marathon of episodes running all week..I’ve got 15 episodes in the DVR.
So, for the next few weeks, my TV watching will revolve around getting as much exposure to Doctor Who as humanly possible. Because David Tennant is cute. And funny. And makes me like Doctor Who.
I wish I had a TARDIS.

Did you see the Top Gear that had David Tennant as the “star in a reasonably-priced car”? Pure TV gold (with the adorable Scottish accent.) Also, don’t bother with the Hitchhiker’s Guide movie; I’d rather attend a Vogon poetry reading. The BBC series from the 80’s is so much better.
KD: I have seen it on Youtube, in fact I looked for it today when I noticed Tennant’s name on the Lap Times board from a recent episode.
I think I have a VHS copy of the British series for Hitchhikers.
And, tell BobT to let you guest blog more often. Your recent entry was by far the funniest thing I have read in a while (well, maybe not as funny as Ryan Kelly’s stuff, but it’s approaching that level. I think Ryan has ascended to a higher level of blogging that most of us will never achieve).
I will support you on your quest to eventually do a time trial. Depending on how tall you are I might even be able to lend you a bike.
1. I had a TV when I was single, but no cable, and I didn’t really care about watching TV. Then I met my husband and his big screen and 10 million channels, and I’m a major TV addict.
2. When I was a kid, there was something about “Doctor Who” that rubbed me the wrong way, too. I have never tried to rewatch it, but I know people who love it, so maybe I will.

Kerry,
BobT is much funnier than I am. Especially his stand up, with the accents and the props and all.
At 5′6″ I’m a virtual Amazon next to you so I won’t be able to borrow any of your bikes. I could probably borrow Bob’s though, or buy it so he can get a shiny new one.
I hadn’t watched Dr. Who in years- probably since I was a kid… I sat down and saw the Dr. Who marathon on New Years. Totally hooked!
Top gear – One of the only shows worth watching these days besides The Daily Show
Season 2 of Being Human just started in the UK. Four episodes so far and it’s great! I agree about David Tennant. He’s brilliant. And scrummy. And I’m sad he’s gone.
